The building in which the museum is housed has a story to tell on its own. The building was the original Guyra Shire Council Chambers built in 1909 and was used until 1981.
The Guyra Historical Society opened the building as a Museum in 1988, maintaining the first room just as the Council had it set up for their meetings. Pictures line the walls of this room of the town’s Founding Fathers as well as Honour Rolls of past Presidents 1907-1981.
The museum collection houses over 4,000 items, some of which are the following:
* When the Fire Brigade was formed in 1929, the appliances used were more manpower than horsepower. The old hose reel was set up on a wagon-type contraption and was pulled by men towards the source of the fire.
* A room that could be described as “Grandma’s Kitchen” which is a far cry from today’s modern “kitchenalla”, with barely a cord in sight .
The museum also houses a number of rare items and collections some are:
* A rare barbed wire collection dating back to the 1875
* A rare collection of Shearing handpieces that includes an American Cooper dated 1900, a Wolsley No. 3 dated 1904 through to the controversial wide comb in 1983
* An early projector machine from the Arcadia Theatre and a number of glass advertising slides which are extremely rare.
* The rarest in the collection is a washing machine used in the1880s. The only other known one is at the Sydney Powerhouse Museum.
The museum will be open this coming Friday 26th, Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th from 10am 3pm. On Friday 26th Australia Day morning tea will be served at the Museum from 9.30am.
