New President for Guyra Chamber

Steve Mepham will take over from Hans Hietbrink as the President of the Guyra and District Chamber of Commerce following the annual general meeting which was held on September 3rd. Bronwyn Grills will take on the vice president’s role with Aileen MacDonald continuing as secretary and Dorothy Lockyer as treasurer. They will be supported by some fresh faces on the board which includes Rebecca Smith, James Warren, Martha Weiderman and Ali Cairns.
After two years as Vice-President Steve says he looking to move forward for the benefit of the whole town and wants to be in a position to take advantage of opportunities as they arise.
“My philosophy is to take the bull by the horns and become the driver to make things start to happen,” Steve said.
“During the last couple of years I have been at the table whenever I can, going along to meetings with council and working on committees to ensure someone is there to fight for Guyra.”
“As President I want to make sure Guyra can continue to go forward and I will fight to see we get a fair share of funding,” he said.
“There has been a bit of doom and gloom over recent years, but I also think there is quiet optimism in the main street despite the fact businesses have been hammered by drought and fire and now Covid.”
“What we need to do now is to keep moving forward and I think the main street can continue to grow if businesses are prepared to work together. Part of that is to give travellers something to talk about when they are on the road, something that will encourage people to get off the highway and stay awhile.
“If we can develop a culture to attract people and to divert them off the highway, everyone will benefit but it is going to come down to a willingness to put in the hard yards. I am already looking at improved signage to help attract people in and restoring the existing town signage which is starting to age.
“There is also a fair bit of stuff before committees waiting for the go ahead. One of those is the walking track around the Mother of Ducks that will hopefully get funding. I plan to continue to explore the things we can do and snaffle the opportunities as they come along.”
