A group of bikers rode into town last Saturday, partly having a “big ride” over the long weekend and partly to hand over a donation of $2,600 to the Guyra Men’s Shed.
They are small group of friends and family who love riding motorbikes and describe themselves as “far from ‘Wild Hogs’ hence the less than frightening moniker ‘Squealing Piglets’
Giving their rides for fun a purpose, this generous group of blokes from the Newcastle area decided to give back to the community, in particular, Men’s Health.
“On our yearly ride we raise money for an organisation or charity that is on our route that promotes men’s health,” organizer Steve Wendtman said. “This year we are staying at Guyra and we are raising much needed funds to support the local Men’s Shed.”
“We were humbled by the reception to our small efforts to assist which made the ride worthwhile.”
The Squealing Piglets were greeted by Men’s Shed manager, John Jackson and members including Richard Navin, Peter Brazier and Dave McKay. The Men’s Shed is under the auspices of Guyra Adult Leaning Association Inc. (GALA) and CEO Dorothy Lockyer and committee members Campbell Wolfenden, Robin Godlonton and Martha Weiderman were also there to welcome the group.
It is a much-needed boost for the Men’s Shed who usually rely on gold coin donations and sales of their work to continue to operate. The donation will go a long way towards establishing a new shed for the group.
The Men’s Shed currently operates from premises behind the Council Chambers, which is being redeveloped as the new Early Childhood Learning Centre. They are in discussions to relocate to the old SES building on the New England Highway.
On Tuesday they met with council Administrator Viv May and Council staff to discuss the move. The SES are still operating from the premises but will vacate the shed in the coming weeks.
Donations are still being accepted via a Go Fund Me page, and they are hoping that the final tally will reach $3,000. As well as personal donations the group also received a generous donation of $1,000 from Glencore Australia.
To support our local Men’s Shed, the Go Fund Me page will remain open until the end of October 2020. To donate go to:
