Educator recognised in National Family Day Care awards

16th Sep 2025

Guyra educator Valerie Hume has been recognised for her dedication to early childhood education, taking out the Tamworth and North West Region Educator Award in the 2025 Excellence in Family Day Care Awards.
The awards celebrate the vital role of family day care, which is the preferred choice of education and care for more than 50,000 Australian families. The program shines a spotlight on educators who not only run their own small businesses but also provide warm, nurturing and educational environments for children in their care.
Valerie, who is registered with Armidale and District Family Day Care, was humbled by the recognition.
“I’m so proud to have been chosen for this award,” she said. “To be recognised among so many amazing educators is such an honour.
“Being trusted with the care and education of children during these early years is such a privilege.
“Watching them grow, reach milestones and discover the world is incredible and the bonds I form with the children and their families is definitely one of the best parts of the job.”
Family Day Care Australia CEO, Andrew Paterson, praised Valerie’s dedication, saying:
“Educators like Valerie demonstrate an incredible level of commitment and care that makes family day care such a valued choice for families. Her work reflects the very best of what family day care has to offer.”
Valerie was quick to thank the support network around her, acknowledging the strong community of educators in Guyra, Armidale, Walcha and Glen Innes.
“I feel extremely grateful to be supported by such a wonderful service,” she said.
“Our community-based program is rated Meeting the National Standards, which we’re all so proud of.
“I also want to give a big shout out to my fellow educators who are always there to support each other.”
As a Regional Award Winner, she is now in the running to become a National Finalist for Educator of the Year.
“It’s such a fulfilling career,” Valerie added. “If anyone is thinking about starting their own family day care service, do it!”
