Planning milestone for proposed wind farm

The proposed Rangoon Wind Farm near Ben Lomond and Glencoe has been issued their Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARS). The SEARs outline the matters required by the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment to be assessed in the project Environmental Assessment report.
Meridian Energy Australia (MEA) is behind the $200 million wind farm. The Rangoon Wind Farm (RWF) project is divided into two locations being RWF North and RWF South. The company is planning to construct 23 to 26 wind turbines, two substations and transmission, a Battery Energy Storage System and associated infrastructure.
Over the next 6 – 8 months the company will work with specialist subconsultants and the community to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Project, which is expected to be lodged with the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment in 2021.
Head of asset development, Angus Holcombe said that receipt of SEARs is a positive planning milestone for the Project.
“It is exciting to see the project reach the milestone and we would like to thank the community and stakeholders for the valuable feedback that assisted greatly with this phase and refining the proposal,” Mr Holcombe said.
Mr Holcombe said that they have undertaken community consultations since early last year to engage with the local community and stakeholders and will be looking to further engage with the community as the project moves forward.
He said that COVID safe face to face meetings have already been held with affected landholders and they have reached out to people within five kilometre radius of the proposed site.
“I recognise that people will have concerns and we are more than happy to take calls and meet with people,” Mr Holcombe said. “We have our website up and running and a community newsletter has gone out advising the status and details of proposal.”
“Consultations are still in the early days and there will be plenty of opportunity for people to engage as the project moves forward. A community consultation committee is being established and members of community will be invited to participate. There will also be drop in centres set up in Glencoe and Ben Lomond.”
Construction is expected to start in 2022.
