Farmers and land managers in the Northern Tablelands can now access new, independent guidance and support to incorporate opportunities in natural capital management and market opportunities into their farm business.
This Local Land Services initiative is designed to increase productivity, improve biodiversity and environmental outcomes and protect market access.
Rachel Lawrence has been appointed by Local Land Services as the Natural Capital Advisor for the Northern Tablelands region.
She is dedicated to helping farmers identify ways to best manage and potentially enhance their natural capital, including helping people to understand the benefits and potential risks of participating in emerging environmental markets.
Rachel brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in managing farm landscapes for both sustainable agricultural outcomes alongside the protection and enhancement of ecological assets on a farm and is looking forward to sharing her experience with our farming community, as well as learning from them.
“I am excited about this opportunity to support farmers in finding a balance between production and environmental outcomes, both of which are an important part of managing a successful, sustainable and potentially regenerative farm business,” said Rachel.
As part of its new Natural Capital Program, Local Land Services is hosting a series of engaging Natural Capital Conversation events across the Northern Tablelands region. These events are designed to help landholders understand the challenges and opportunities in this emerging space with the overall aim of increasing their natural capital in a way that supports, and may improve, productivity while managing, restoring and protecting the environment.
Upcoming events will feature expert speakers, and valuable networking opportunities with farmers who are leading the way in natural capital.
• Carbon Farming Fundamentals and Natural Capital, Tenterfield, 13 August (Granite Borders Landcare in collaboration with Clare Edwards, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development).
• A Natural Capital Conversation at ‘Billabong’, Elsmore, 19 September.
Rachel will also be presenting at Southern New England Landcare’s event ‘Driving Agricultural Sustainability’ in Armidale on 14 August with further events planned in the coming months.
“At these events I will provide background knowledge on this emerging space to help people understand natural capital, and why it is important”, said Rachel.
“I will also be able to answer landholder questions on how to find the best opportunities, better understand the challenges and connect with relevant service providers”, she said. “My aim is to assist landholders to make good decisions for their property regarding natural capital”.
