Caspers grand final hopes end with shoot out and sudden death

16th Sep 2025

With a grand final spot on the line, Guyra United’s 3rd grade travelled to Inverell on Saturday. The team came in full of confidence and started strong in what turned out to be a tight, back-and-forth contest.
Guyra struck first in the 14th minute, with Sujit finding the net from a penalty kick cross delivered by Charlie. They held that 1–0 lead for the next 40 minutes, but momentum shifted when a rough call saw a Guyra player sent off, leaving the side down to ten men.
Despite the setback, Guyra started the second half well, but Inverell equalised in the 60th minute. With tired legs starting to show, Guyra turned to the bench for fresh energy, though the score remained locked at 1–1 when the full-time whistle blew.
Extra time brought another 30 minutes of hard-fought football. Guyra dug deep, with the backs holding strong and turning away multiple Inverell attacks, but fatigue and cramping limited their push forward. After 120 minutes, the score was still level, sending the match to a penalty shootout.
Things looked promising when Damien saved Inverell’s first attempt, but the shootout reached 4–4 before moving into sudden death. Eventually, Inverell saved a Guyra shot to claim the win, ending the season for the 3rd grade side.
It was a gutsy performance from Guyra, who battled for big minutes a man short and showed exactly what it means to be a Casper.
