Massive weekend for Guyra Soccer
What an amazing display of community spirit, pride and sportsmanship by the Guyra United Soccer Club on Saturday. The weather was perfect, the canteen was up and running, the coffee was brewing (thanks to Chris from CJ’s Coffee Co.) and the morning saw the fields full of excited children and their families.
All 12 Junior teams wore their brand new jerseys this week creating a sea of bright orange, black and white (plus grey goalie shirts). A massive thank you to our jersey sponsors DRT Logistics, Simpsons Earthmoving & Repairs, S.A. & R.A. Tibbs, Highland Petfood and Tuckeroo Macadamias for making this possible. A big thank you also to Paul Schmude and his team at Armidale Sportspower for overseeing the production of the jerseys.
All teams from the our Under 6’s to the Senior 1st Grade will now be identified by the one jersey design with the only difference being the junior and senior sponsors. The new club hoodies and shirts also arrived this week adding to the colourful display on the grounds.
The refurbished canteen was certainly put to the test with home and away teams keen to support our Old Boys fundraiser by purchasing food (including cupcakes) and drinks, taking tickets in our raffle and 100 Club and entering the lollipop guessing competition (donated by Dasha’s Hardware). There were 73 lollipops in the tin with 1st prize going to Connor Montague and 2nd prize going to Rose Kliendienst. Congratulations and thank you to everyone for supporting our fundraiser.
The action returns to Armidale this week with an away round before returning to Guyra for our last home round the following week. There are also 5 junior teams taking part in the Jack Vallance Memorial Carnival in Armidale this Sunday so it will be another big weekend for our juniors.
Under 6 Spooks - The Spooks hunger for the ball saw a great game again this week against TAS with 7 goals added to the team’s impressive total for the season.
Under 7 Jellybeans - It was fantastic to see the team in their new jerseys this week. Our special guest coach this week was Cooper, Lachie E-C’s older brother. Cooper ran with the team during the first half. It has been wonderful having our guest coaches step in each week.
Under 12 Spirits - The Spirits took to the field this week against the leading team in their division, confident of a better result than their previous encounter. The team started strongly with even play across the field. A high ball over the keeper’s head saw DK take the lead and they maintained the score at 1 – 0 until half time. Great persistence from the Spirits created an opening for Harry Purvis to score a brilliant goal, levelling the score 1-1. The even match continued until just before full time when DK received a lucky break with the ball hitting the post and rebounding at their feet for a clear second shot. The final score at full time was a very respectable 2-1 to DK. All players were pleased with this result and look forward to the next time they meet.
