Great start to the season for Caspers

21st Apr 2021

It only seemed like yesterday that we were cheering on 3rd grade in their grand final victory and we welcome 2021 to see what this brings. Second grade welcomed back some wonderful players this season and one new player took a step in the right direction with signing up. Nick Burey and BJ Kliendienst were the two returned players and Braith Kliendienst started his first full year with Guyra United. We also welcomed back Col Stanley as our coach.
It was a typical first game of the year. The weather was not in our corner, and we had a few players playing out of position, yet with these issues a great team shone through and we came away with a hard fought win and bought home 3 points.
First goal came off the boot of 2020 Golden Boot winner, Normie, who slotted one past the Norths United keeper after a mistake off a goal kick. Guyra seemed to slow down a bit and Norths capitalised with a counter attack and snuck one into the back of the net to take the score to 1-1 at half time.
After oranges, we came out with a more settled persona about ourselves. This showed as our ball work and passing kicked up a level and the team started to look like we had been playing for years in these positions. Tyson was the next on the scoreboard after he picked his spot in the bottom right back corner of the opposition’s net and absolutely pulverised the cover off the ball to get it there. Guyra, 2-1.
An uncontested corner let Norths back into the game with 20 minutes to go. Guyra stepped up another gear after this and had the majority of the ball for the rest of the game. A superb passage of play, which almost went through every player on the field, led up to Normie slotting home the winner. Guyra came home victorious 3-2.
Jake Ellis came away with the 3 points after a solid game in the midfield, Jason Reed received 2 points with a tough game in the centre back role and Luke Brazier bought the 1 point home after shutting down bucket loads of runs down the wing.
Third Grade also had a great start to the season winning 5 - 3 over Armidale city west side. Rexly Tasso scored four of these goals with Robert Sisson scoring 1.
The new under 35s Caspers began their first game for the season against Westside Armidale in Armidale on Saturday. The game was played in tough conditions with the rain falling constantly for the majority of the match.
The Caspers opened the scoring with Bobby Blair finding space behind the defence and calmly putting the ball past the Westside keeper. The Caspers were denied at least three goals with some fine keeping from the Westside keeper and were punished with two two quickfire goals giving the Westside team a 2-1 lead at half time.
The boys were enjoying the break and came out with new vigour and it wasn’t long before the scores were equalled after good pressure saw the Westside defence score an own goal to make the score 2-2. The boys had some good chances but the score remained level at full time with everybody enjoying their first hit out for the year.
No points for this game but special mention and a welcome to the club for Adam Litherland and Jason Siddell. Oh, and extra special mention for Commando Rocks Roll during the match.
As a club, we warmly welcome all supporters this coming Saturday to come and watch our first home game of 2021.
